Skopelos Recevies 2020 Golden Spoon Award

Skopelos at New World, one of Pensacola’s oldest fine dining restaurants, has been recognized as a recipient of the prestigious 2020 Golden Spoon Award awarded by Florida Trend magazine.

The Golden Spoon Awards are Florida’s oldest and arguably most prestigious culinary awards, given annually to “recognize outstanding fine dining restaurants that demonstrate consistency in high standards and longevity.” Florida Trend started the awards over 50 years ago as a guide to executives traveling around Florida; since then it has become one of the most coveted recognitions in Florida’s culinary world.

Skopelos at New World originally opened in Pensacola, Florida in 1959 under the helm of Paul Silivos. Today his son, Gus Silivos, runs the show as the Owner, Executive Chef and Director of Operations. This is Skopelos’ second time to receive the Golden Spoon award.

“It’s an honor to be selected as a Golden Spoon winner,” says Chef Gus Silivos. “I can remember when that honor was bestowed to the restaurant in 1969 when no one knew what it meant. I have been looking forward to the day when it would be awarded again to Skopelos.”

That day is today, and brings a lot of positive to what has been a tough year for the restaurant. In September of 2020, Skopelos’ present day location at 600 S. Palafox Street received catastrophic  damage due to Hurricane Sally. Because of the extent of the damage, Skopelos remains closed indefinitely. However, while the kitchen at Skopelos is quiet, guests can still savor the incredible flavors created by Executive Chef Gus Silivos at two of his other restaurants, Scenic 90 Cafe and Nancy’s Catering & Events. At either restaurant, guests may also call ahead (with at least 24 hours notice) to have one of their favorite dishes from Skopelos be prepared for them. Scenic 90 Cafe is located at 701 Scenic Highway (850-433-8844); Nancy’s Catering & Events is located at 555 Scenic Highway (850-434-0112).
